The musical interpretations are convincing and reflect a mature artistry of a very high level," wrote the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in its motivation.
- It feels incredibly fun and exciting! I get to visit many places in northern Sweden that I haven't been to before and get to know and make music with great new colleagues, I'm really looking forward to that!
We get to hear her as a soloist in John Fernström's powerful symphonic suite Songs of the Sea.
– It's interesting and expressive music. Most of all, I think it's great to be part of a symphony! It suits me well, because I like to use my voice in a more instrumental way. And then of course it feels right to make Swedish music, albeit in English, but it will be exciting for both us and everyone in the audience! Set sail for a musical voyage of discovery!
The concert opens with Polish Grażyna Bacewicz's Concerto for String Orchestra, one of her most played and popular works. The music is sometimes harsh, but also beautifully shimmering and rhythmically effective. It has features from Baroque music; The piece is often compared to Johann Sebastian Bach's famous Brandenburg Concertos, because here there is the same motor drive and sonorous luster, even though the musical language is completely different.
We also hear Arnold Schoenberg's absolutely magical Verklärte Nacht – Transfigured Night – for string orchestra. The music vibrates with strong emotions, ecstasy, fragile lines that sometimes cut through each other, perfectly balanced. It is at times painfully beautiful.
Schoenberg was inspired by a poem about a couple in love who walk in the night, but she is pregnant with another man and fears that her lover will condemn and abandon her. But the beauty of the night and their love will overcome the difficulties. He says: "Do not let the child become a burden, see how the universe glitters".
