From Beans to Buns
Storytelling, semla, and a taste of the unexpected
You may know Shrove Tuesday as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday – but in Sweden, we call it Fettisdag, and we celebrate with food. Lots of it.
The most famous treat is the semla:
a cardamom bun filled with almond paste and whipped cream. But up here in the north, there’s another tradition too – bruna bönor med fläsk, brown beans with pork – a salty dish once served to mark the end of winter fasting.
Join Anna Sellén – singer, storyteller and founder of Norrklang – for a warm and whimsical celebration of this curious day. You’ll enjoy freshly baked semlor, warm drinks, and – for the curious – a taste of the traditional northern meal.
There will be stories, flavours, and a few folksongs to set the mood.
We call it Fat Tuesday – and we serve it with beans.
The event takes place in the Yellow-red house in Gammelstads Kyrkby – a cozy venue in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage site. With space for just ten guests per seating, this is an intimate experience where food, music and storytelling come together in true northern style.
