ALLA (EVERYONE) Begins with a Salon

The art salon refers to a juried group exhibition with roots in 17th-century Paris. The emergence of the salon in the art world can be seen as the beginning of a more inclusive exhibition format, making art accessible to a wider public. At the same time, the format gave institutions and galleries considerable power to determine what was considered "good art."

An Experiment in Radical Inclusion
Today, the art salon is often seen as a way of opening up the art scene to both emerging and established artists, giving more people the opportunity to exhibit their work in an art gallery. However, the jury often remains as a gatekeeper between what is created and what is ultimately shown. For the exhibition ALLA (EVERYONE), we have experimented with the hierarchies and power structures of the art world by allowing anyone who wishes to display a work of their choice in the exhibition. What happens when the power to decide what fills the galleries of the Art Hall is handed over to, well, everyone? And who exactly is everyone?

Entertainment as a Strategy
In the second part of the exhibition, artist Jonas Staal has transformed the space into a cinema. Through the video installation Propaganda Theatre, the artist explores how art and culture can be used as tools to shape and influence society and its national identity. Among other themes, Staal examines the relationship between popular culture and military strategy. In addition to highlighting the importance of a free cultural sphere, this part of the exhibition invites conversations about how we are all influenced by the images and narratives that surround us, whether in advertising, on the big screen, or on social media.

Meet Us in the Art Hall Entrance
For thirty minutes, you will be guided through the exhibition by an art educator. Together, we will explore the exhibition’s themes in greater depth and discuss the artistic techniques and forms of expression on display. You will also learn more about the artist and their working methods.

The tour is free and open to everyone. No advance registration is required!
