Sandön

Sandön is Luleå archipelago's biggest island with its area of 25,7 square kilometers and it is also the island with the most habitants. The island spans from Luleå city, just across Tjuvholmssundet, all the way to Klubbvikens Havsbad where the outer archipelago starts. Sandön translates to island of sand and nothing could be more true. This islands is made almost entirely of sand, gravel and sediment from Luleå river.

You'll find several large shingle fields on Sandön. The biggest one can be found in Stenåkern nature reserve, it is as much as 1400 meters long and 300 meters wide.

This island is perfect if you want to escape the stress and fast pace of the city and enjoy a peaceful hike. You can rent a rowing boat from Luleå Turist Center and row across Tjuvholmssundet to Sandön and then explore this beautiful island on your own. On this island you'll also find the popular place Klubbviken Havsbad, check them out if you'd like to hire a lodge, eat some good food or enjoy a hot sauna in the archipelago! During winter an ice road will be prepared to the island if the ice thickness allows it.
